Test Report

With its 20hp V-Twin engine and hydrostatic transmission, the Maktrac sits at the top-end of the range of ride-on mowers from Makita.

We reckon it will also find use in large gardens (up to 6,000sq m), around hotels and caravan parks, and because it is easy to ramp into a trailer it could interest small contractors and garden maintenance teams.

Cutting width is 102cm and this machine can cut and drop, mulch or collect. The collector has a 300-litre capacity. Emptying is controlled by a lever. Cutting height is adjustable from 30mm to 90mm. But what impresses us most is the ease of control and its steering.

“I love the hydrostatic drive,” enthuses Pinion. He nudges it through a narrow gateway and cuts a small back lawn to test the manoeuvrability. “The steering is very good and the machine turns tightly,” he reports. We also find it gives good cutting performance in dense grass. But we can’t get it to collect. With the machine up-ended, we find the explanation underneath — the blades have been put on upside down.

On a positive note, we appreciate the wash port for cleaning the deck.
