A crowd gathers as the Aebi Combicut is unloaded from the trailer. This machine is the latest generation of hydrostatic single-axle tractor and it just oozes muscle. It has been designed for hard use and long days. Its raw strength is clear to see beneath the executive-class exterior. The CC66 is a high-tech, “thinking” machine — one that should find plenty of work in the commercial world.
Based in Switzerland, Aebi is known for its technical innovation and perfection. The CC66 costs over £8,000 so we are expecting a lot from this machine. And we are not disappointed.
The design is stylish — it’s already caught the attention of all passing by. There is no doubting it is robust with its cast construction, not box section. It has a powerful but quiet 18hp engine. There are three speed ranges — two for work and one for travel. And this one travels fast. You may want the optional seat to keep up with it.
The company rep takes us through the controls. There is one lever to adjust the handlebars up or down and a trigger to offset them for working alongside boundaries or when you want to work on a bank but keep your feet on the flat.
There is a thumb lever for forward and reverse — the reverse being spring-operated so it always jumps back to neutral. Brakes work both wheels and there is a hand throttle. A small lever locks and unlocks the implements in position.
All controls are clearly labelled for easy identification and it takes only a few minutes for our tester to master them. He takes the Aebi for a spin — literally. This machine has “active steering” so applying the lightest pressure to the left causes the machine to turn instantly. You can even zero-turn this one.
“The steering is sensitive so the machine can be manoeuvred with a high level of accuracy. It’s a beast of a machine but also gentle,” says the tester.
He finds it easy to engage the drive with just his thumb. The drive is smooth and jerk-free. In the paddock the flail mower has no difficulty shredding the nettles and docks. But, coming from an alpine habitat, the CC60 is also built for bank work. It has the agility of a mountain goat — more oil is delivered to the lower wheel to keep the machine stable.
Changing attachments is quick and simple — pull a lever and drive away. Servicing also looks simple. Thought has even been given to the shape of the fuel filler. There should be no excuse for spilling petrol.
Investing in this machine will give a power unit capable of working all year round — from mowing to sweeping paths, clearing snow and blowing leaves. With its trendy looks as well as its muscle and dexterity, this unit is both an image booster and a serious worker. It is multifunctional and built to last. We can find no fault with it.
